It's no secret that I hold a special place in my heart for NICU babies and their families. Every time I hear that a friend has delivered a premature child (or two), I automatically go into flash back mode! When this sweetheart came into the world in November, those same heart strings were pulled. I instantly felt a wave of emotion for my high school friend and teammate who would have to endure one of the harder roads a mom can face. Being discharged from the hospital and leaving my babies is one of the most emotional and challenging things I have ever had to do. I immediately reached out to her to offer her support and encouragement. I watched for months through social media posts about how he was progressing with the fantastic team of NICU Doctors and Nurses. We had planned on doing a NICU session but on the day of our session, I was elated to find out that he was being discharged and welcomed home! That did not stop me from offering the best gift I had to offer, my talent!
There are so many things about premature newborns that differ from the average newborn who is coming home for the first time. First, premature newborns are unable to maintain their body temperatures and need to stay bundled up in multiple layers in order to stay warm. Secondly, they are far more susceptible to communicable disease and germs. Lastly, they need to stay flat when ever possible to make sure that their windpipe is not pinched. These factors make the average newborn photography session a challenge and so I offered to come to their home to capture his 100th day milestone. Their home has the most perfectly bright, wide open window which provided a gorgeous soft light for our on-location newborn session. I had decided to pack winter themed items because although he was born in November, he was meant to be a winter baby so therefore it made sense to me. I thoroughly enjoyed my time visiting, sharing stories and snuggling this thriving miracle baby!

Have you ever wondered which session I find to be the most challenging?? My answer is the 1st Birthday and Cake Smash Session. At this age, the emerging toddler is the most challenging subject I work with. They are either crawling or walking off the set, they have an opinion about sitting versus standing or laying down, they smile on demand but usually need lots of coaxing and well, some kids are just plain scared of their birthday cake! It takes a lot of energy and patience for the 1st Birthday and Cake Smash Session. This handsome man was exactly what I described. He preferred to "pitter-patter" all over my studio instead of stand still for his personal photo shoot. He was not keen on giving me many smiles but mom did her best and sang him lots of songs to solicit one. He like 50 percent of the kids I see for 1st Birthday and Cake Smash sessions was completely uninterested in his birthday cake. He did for a brief moment in time enjoy giving his balloons a nice shake and slap! All in all, you would have no idea from these photographs that he gave us a sweaty and fun, run around the studio! I first met him this past November during his family's Christmas session when he was not yet walking. What a treat it was to see him developing into being the on-the-go toddler, Happy Birthday to you!!
What a way to kick-off mini sessions for 2017! When my very good friend asked me to do a "Kissing Booth" Valentine's Day mini session, I was tickled pink! When my clients ask me to "jump," I often respond, "how high?" This was no exception. I really pride myself on being creative and I absolutely LOVE creating the cutest photo sets! This was the first mini session that I didn't advertise for but had some other interest from current clients, so I decided to run with it and add a couple more appointments. What cute and adorable toddlers I was lucky to see back in my studio. Both of the children featured in this blog, I have known since shortly after birth. It was great to see their developing personalities now that they are 18 and 20 months! For anyone who is interested in a "Kissing Booth" Valentine's Day mini, you didn't miss out! I will offer this mini for the entire month of February. The session fee is $50 and includes 5 digital images that you choose from an online proof gallery. You may purchase additional images if you like. Aren't these faces just so kissable???
